No it's not fun, but it gets me to my final goal of scanning the negatives.

So far I've scanned 50 of the approximately 300 negatives.

Here is my favorite picture so far

Lillian Mason Dollar, Juanita Butt Jones, Nell Mason Butt, Jerry Butt 1936

I shared this picture with my dad and aunt and my aunt confirmed that it was my grandmother, her brother, her mother, and her aunt in the photo.

Since it doesn't snow much in Alabama I was able to use Google to find information about this snow storm. According to Bhamwiki there was a multi day snowstorm in late January 1936, this would make my grandmother 10 in this photo and her brother Jerry 13. My great grandmother, Nell Mason Butt, is 38 in this picture and her sister Lillian Mason Dollar is 32.

Why I love this picture so much: this is the youngest I've ever seen my great grandmother. I knew her, she died when I was 23, but this is the 1st time I've seen her in her younger days and it took my breath to realize it was her. That is my Nanny, enjoying the moment with her kids in the snow. I would bet money that my great grandfather David Butt took this picture of his family.

I used the colorizing tool on MyHeritage.com to add color to the photo and bring it to life.

I've also came across pictures of my grandfather and grandmother at the beach, possibly on their honeymoon and to see my grandmother in a bikini looking like a 1940s movie star has filled me with joy and few giggles.

Now, to scan more pictures and see what I can find.

What is your favorite old photo of your family?

jerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08303817138122836095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711708351195036777.post-31164418715168837762020-10-16T11:34:00.006-06:002020-10-16T11:34:47.382-06:00Cleaning negatives
Yes, I've been lax in posting :)

I've spent the past few days cleaning film negatives so that I can scan them. Close to 300 negatives.

These negatives were in a large box at my grandmother's house and I grabbed them. The box had been outside in the open air carport for a while and were covered in dust and dirt. I had no idea how old they were other than they looked like the 1950s but not being a photographer with no real knowledge of film types I couldn't even be sure about that.

I've held off for a few years in doing anything with them as I needed a way to get them copied.

Luckily I stopped by the Epson booth at RootsTech back in Feb and I saw they had a good flatbed scanner that has the ability to scan negatives. I couldn't afford it then so I started saving my money and finally purchased the Epson Perfection V600.

So, to prepare the dirty negatives for scanning I watched a few videos, read blog posts, and asked people with knowledge of film. The best answer was to use 98% alcohol and clean non linty cloth.

Steps to clean the negatives:

1. If you use 98% alcohol open windows and run a fan! The vapors are strong. You want the higher alcohol content as it evaporates without leaving water droplets behind. I ordered it from Amazon.

2. Gather old rags that are clean and free of lint. You don't want to clean them and leave lint behind

3. Place some sort of rack (I used a clean cookie cooling rack) to place the negatives on to dry.

4. Dip your rag in the alcohol and then wipe in one direction across the negative. Only rub hard if there is debris that won't lift off

5. Let negatives dry.

6. Start scanning.

I've now got 300 pictures of my dad's parents, grand parents and extended family from as far back as 1936!

This is a genealogy gold mine!
jerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08303817138122836095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711708351195036777.post-73160544040913027222020-01-08T11:52:00.003-07:002020-01-08T11:52:55.169-07:00Intermarrying cousins meet mind mapping! At some point anyone who does genealogy will run into cousins marrying cousins, a sister marrying a widowed father in law (yep, really), and family groups that just can't seem to stay away from each other.

I have several groups, that I'm aware of, that intermarry, my Shanks line is one, my Adams and Atkins line... well that sends me into a near panic just looking at the intermarrying there. There are a few others I just haven't started untangling yet.

Recently when looking at DNA matches I realized when viewing other trees that there seemed to be a mingling of my Jones/Carter and Jennings/Bruce lines. I went round and round looking at trees and creating quick and dirty trees to sort it out and I realized -- I need to see this, not just look at different pedigree charts, but see the connection.

Luckily I have a mind mapping app (a visual thinking tool, a way to sort your thoughts out in a visual way). So,I started mapping out this line and what do you know, it worked! For me anyway.

Mind map of ancestors of living grand parent
(Yellow box on the far right: she marries into the Jennings line also, I just can't verify the parents, yet)

I'm able to see the lines to and from each family group, see how the sibling of a Grandmother married into the generation of a Great Grandparent. This example of intermarrying isn't that bad, but I can visually see where the lines mingle and it helps put everyone in their place. (I've started a mind map of my Adams/Atkins line and it already looks like a spider got drunk and started a web).

I use the app SimpleMind+ (I'm not an affiliate nor do I get compensation). I needed the paid (iPad) version for several reasons: 1: I can make multiple parent/start boxes 2: I can make new lines from one box onto another box that is on a different line. In this example the direct ancestors boxes are oval while siblings are square. Also, red lines connect direct lines, except for Mary Ann Jennings to her son Andrew Jones (don't ask me why it's not red I haven't the foggiest).

What other apps outside of family tree apps do you find useful?

I admire people who can make a list of goals, work the plan and get it done. Me, well, I start with a list and then it goes out the window; I never know where the list is, or get discouraged when I want to check something off the list and it's 2 AM and I can't go out and get it done. Suffice to say, I love making lists just not actually using them.

But, I've been so overwhelmed with my genealogy research that I'm making some To Do Lists, with short easy to achieve tasks.

These short tasks I'm hoping will keep me from going down too many rabbit holes (ok, we all know it happens it's just time to rein them in a bit).

So, my 1st task on my list is: 1 DNA match group per week! There I'm putting my foot down. I tend to see a match, go searching then see something else and next thing you know I was looking for my Jennings matches, which are on my paternal grandfather's side, then I'm off looking for something else and then I forget where I was so I go on to a new line. Nope, not any more, I'll write the weeks Surname for matches to sort on my board and stick with it. So, to kick it off early, this week is JENNINGS (see group sheet below).

Add spouses to siblings on my tree: 1 family group per week. I know I could add more in a week, but I don't want it to feel too overwhelming. I have notes on my desktop software about the spouses I just never made a family card for most of them. Now, with so many DNA matches I need to see where some of these others names are coming from.

Scanning documents - UUUGGGHHHH. I will set aside 1 day per month for scanning and sorting of photos and documents. That's it.

Blog Posts - I'm determined to get more of these old family pics and documents out to distant family members so I will be putting more up here.

Easy Peasy! Yea (big eye roll here) right! At least it is a start.

Docia Disharoon, 14 Sep 1856 - 15 Feb 1945 (per Find A Grave and Ancestry). Lived most of her life in Randolph County, AL. Docia is not in my line and I'm posting her picture in hopes that one day someone will search for her and find this treasure.
This picture came from my great grandmother, Susie Lowe Bolt's (1899-1984) home, and it could have been belonged to either of her parents, John Henry Lowe (1858-1929) and Mary Chappell (1874-1963) or the parents of James Olin Bolt (Susie's husband) (1900-1971), Columbus Franklin Bolt (187401940) and Leola Barronton (1876-1917).

John Henry Lowe had 2 wives prior to Mary Chappell (that is a long dramatic story) so maybe Docia Disharoon was friends with Mary Alice Sorrells (1868-1891) or Lizzie Thompson (died soon after marriage). I will tell more of this story soon.

I just hope Miss Docia Disharoon finds her family.

My Shanks line. They will drive you to drink, throw things and cuss a little (or a lot).

Every year I sit down with all the paperwork from my grandmother and great grandmother (more about the boxes they left for me) and I try to sort through this line. I know, just go backwards from your person... Nope, nope, nope. Well, you can, and then it gets tangled into a web of I don't know what.

We'll start with my GGGG Great Grandmother, Margaret Anderson who on the 5th of Jan 1837 married Alexander Shanks. Simple? Nope. See, if all this paperwork I have shows anything it is that Margaret and Alexander were cousins. Being cousins isn't the nightmare part of this

Lets work this out:

Matthew Shanks b. 1740, Ireland
immigrates with one 3 year old son, James on the Earl of Hillsborough and is granted land. (https://sites.rootsweb.com/~lynneb/earlhillsbL.html). No mother on board, at least no woman bearing the Shanks last name.

1. James Shanks - b 1764
New Wife "Ann"
2.Matthew Shanks Jr. act 1779, marries Nancy (has son Robert M)
3. Robert Shanks b. 1780 Abbeville District - marries Nan (that is all we have) (parents of Alexander we hope)
4. Margaret Shanks marries Abram Auton 1806
5. Martha Shanks m John McFerrin
6. Jenny Shanks b. app 1784 in Abbeville District, NC marries Jonathon Anderson (parents of Margaret Anderson above)

So, this should be it, this should along with finding marriage info, census info and all the good things this should be it. But no.

Each of those kids, has a slew of kids, all named Matthew, Robert, Margaret, Martha Shanks, along with a few more Andersons and an extra Adams or 2 to mix in with my other Adams line and...
I have 4 Roberts all born within 20 years of each other, and each of them could be the father of Alexander, or it could still be my original Robert.

When I look at trees online I start to get excited, maybe this person has untangled this mess, well, very few of them have all the kids listed, Some have Jenny as being a daughter to Matthew Jr, some list her as a different Shanks all together, I don't think they want to admit what could be going on here. Heck, I don't even know what's going on here.

I do know this is the line my great grandmother and her sisters used to enter the DAR, so someone else believes all of this. Yes, there could be lots of new evidence that is now available, there could also be the same old evidence just rearranging the names - I don't know. Like I said, this family drives me bonkers! I do have a few DNA matches that trace back to Matthew Shanks - we just all seem to get there along a different path.

However I'm related to Matthew Shanks I'd like him to know one thing: it was truly acceptable for your kids to use other names when naming their children (yes you could have broken with tradition).
I also want a screenshot to keep on the laptop for when my toddler is watching tv and I'm scanning through matches on Ancestry.

I stumbled across a post about a Surname Table on the Family History Fanatics page and thought that is exactly what I need!

So I looked it over and then it happened - my brain went blank, then it started over thinking.

Yes, I see the Fathers line column and so on, why are the names only there once, the names should repeat. Are all of those lines adoptions, name changes... WHAT, I don't understand! I scrolled through the post and found a link to their video on how to create it and in just a minute it all made sense. You only need to list a name ONCE, one time, that is all. If you have your dad's last name at the top of the column it doesn't need to show up in each generation - unless there is a name change but that's not where this was going.

That makes sense! When I'm scrolling through matches I don't need the entire lineage laid out to come to my 1st conclusion, just a name match. As I get further and further into my research not all names will be as familiar, heck, I'd forgotten about the name Avery as my grandmothers 4th Great Grandmother (or so we think).

Here is a copy of my Surname Table and you can go to Family History Fanatics and see their post and watch a great YouTube video on how to make the spreadsheet.

I'm spending lots of time reading up on understanding DNA results, learning how to figure out how people match, and making lots of notes. Which led me to realize I have Evernote, why the heck am I not using it. So, I had to get a few updates, but I'm back in the note taking swing of things. Can I say I love all the Evernote templates out in the genealogy world.

I also updated my laptop software, Reunion for Mac. Wow, so many great new features and it looks cleaner than the older version I was using.

I had enrolled my grandfather in Jones Y-DNA group so I'm untangling all that info. Because tracing Jones lines is so much fun I just had to jump into the deep end of that pool.

And holy moly Thru Lines and Color Coding in the last 24 hours.

But, after my self imposed hibernation my brain is enjoying all the new information, even if it daunting.

So, I'll keep plugging along and getting used to all the new tools, and still relying on good ol' pen and paper when I need dig deep into a problem.

By doing the DNA test I've also come out of genealogy hibernation.

I've dug in here and there, but nothing consistent, until now.

So, I'm hoping to revive this blog and start sharing my ancestors again.
Since I have a direct male Jones (or 2) willing to do the test I've jumped in.
Here are is a list of my confirmed JONES ancestors.
This list is for collaboration with the JONES YDNA group and anyone else who may be connected with this line. I am also going to list the children, in a separate post, for these lines; as many of my ancestors had 7+ children; I'm 99% sure there is a child or 2 missing from these lists. If you are a part of this JONES line please feel free to let me know if a child is missing and also - Please let me know if there is an error and where I can confirm the new info.
m. Lula Leanna KILGORE (HUTCHINS 1ST marriage) b 29 Apr 1890 d 25 Feb 1983.

George was probably born in Calhoun or Etowah Co, AL (based on his parents living in and moving around this area). He and Lula lived in Gadsden AL; he is buried in Crestwood Cemetery.

George was a son of:
Andrew JONES b 1862 Jefferson Co, AL d. 22 Jan 1936 Ball Play, Cherokee AL.
m. Victoria CARTER b 1861 GA d 25 Nov 1936 Cherokee AL

Andrew lived in Polk Co, GA (after the death of his mother), then Andrew is found in Calhoun, Etowah and Cherokee AL. He and Victoria are buried in Crossville Cemetery, Crossville, DeKalb Co, AL

Andrew was the son of:
Belson JONES b 1822 York Co, SC d 1894 Polk Co, GA
m Mary Ann JENNINGS b 1826 SC d. 1862 Jefferson Co, AL

Belson and Maryann were married 30 July 1846 in Benton, Co, AL (now Calhoun Co). After that they are found in the Jonesboro area of Jefferson Co, AL. MaryAnn died in 1862 sometime after the birth of Andrew. Bleson then married Martha (Louisa) Murry in Calhoun Co, AL; the family is next found in Floyd GA, and then Polk Co, GA. He is buried in Jackson Chapel Cemetery, Cedartown, Polk Co, GA.

I think (still confirming) Belson was the son of:
Benjamin JONES Jr. b 1795 NC d aft 1870 Jefferson Co, AL
m Mary ROSS b. ?? d aft 1870 AL

Benjamin Jr was the son of: (I'm still confining this info so please take with a grain of salt).
Benjamin JONES Sr. b NC d SC
I am going to start posting more pictures I have of my ancestors; these photos shouldn't be sitting in boxes and not being viewed by others.

Well, they were unknown to me and the little piece of paper that was taped to the back that listed these people had long since fell off. The picture was in with all of the Lloyd/Adams papers and pictures so I figured they were somehow related to that line. When I was last in Wilcox county Alabama I did drive around looking to see if there was a porch that had the same wood work pattern as shown in the picture, no luck.
This month I finally made a trip to Salt Lake City for a few days of family history fun. While searching for more information about my ancestors in the Wilcox County Heritage book I found my picture printed. Yep, I almost fell out of my chair and I did want to jump up and down with joy.

My little mystery is finally solved, the bearded, balding man on the left is William Holt Lloyd (1841-1912), brother to my great great grandfather James B. Lloyd (Mr. J.B as he was known is mentioned in several of my earlier blog posts). Yeaaaaaaaa. I finally have names to put to the picture, and I only had to travel to Salt Lake City to find him. Now that I do have a name for him I can see the family resemblance when I look at pictures of J.B. Lloyd.

I have a few more finds I'll post over the next couple of weeks.jerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08303817138122836095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711708351195036777.post-103804733799084782012-10-15T12:23:00.001-06:002012-10-15T12:23:14.389-06:00Salt Lake City finds - still sortingMy trip to Salt Lake City was great; though I could have stayed an extra week or two in the library. I'm still sifting through all of my finds and figuring out where I stand with a few of my ancestors. I did have a few great finds that answered a few questions and of course a most finds have led to many more questions.

As soon as work lets up a little this week I will post about finding out the names to a group of people in an old photo I have. Yep, had to go all the way to Salt Lake City to find the answer.jerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08303817138122836095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711708351195036777.post-16270313863060708962012-08-20T12:07:00.002-06:002012-08-20T12:07:22.945-06:00Going to Salt LakeI received news yesterday that in September I'm going to Salt Lake for 3 days. Yep 3 days to explore the Family Search Library. I'm super excited and yet a bit panicked; I thought when I planned my trip I'd have more planning time. Oh well, I'll get all my research ducks in a row and hit the ground running when I get there.

If anyone reads this that has been to the library in Salt Lake and has any advice to give I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've took the plunge and started a tree on Wikitree. I'm entering the 1st few generations by hand since I have way too many weird notes in Reunion for Mac and I'm not sure how to keep those notes private when doing a Gedcom download. My tree is slowly growing and I'm trying to figure out the html codes to make the sources look nice and pretty but info will be added.

Thank you all for your kind words after my last post and for the handful of private messages that were sent to me. And if there are any distant cousins out there waiting for my return, feel free to message me any time. I may not have been very active in the Gen world lately but I will always enjoy meeting distant cousins.

Ok, all for now, I'll have a real Gen related post up soon.
These stories are of our ancestors some we knew and loved dearly and others we will never know much about. I know a lot about todays Wednesday Child, he was Daniel James G., my son. Daniel died on Feb 17, 2012 from complications from Leukemia. In the past month since Daniel’s death several of my ancestors keep creeping into my mind, their lives and stories helping me on my journey.

I think of Daniel’s 4th great grandfather Dr. David Adams. When he practiced medicine a child presenting with signs of Leukemia would have died painfully within weeks, a month or two if the child was lucky. Would Dr. Adams be glad to know that in this day and age this terrible disease can be cured and that Daniel was able to have 8 good months after his diagnosis and these months were relatively pain free due to advances in medicine.

I think of Maggie H Adams Lloyd, daughter of Dr. David Adams, who died June 22, 1884, 2 months after her 7 month old son John Bartow Lloyd passed away. Family history says that both Maggie and her son John were ill after his birth and neither ever thrived. I can believe that passing of John left Maggie so heartbroken that she was never able to recover.

I think of my 4th great grandmother Naomi Ann Cox LLoyd, she bore 18 children. Three of her children died before they reached the age of 6. Three more of her boys lost their lives during the Civil War. People say a mother should never have to bury her child; and they are right. Naomi buried 6 of her children, six children that I am sure never left her heart or mind.

My grandmother, Juanita Butt Jones passed away December 21, 2005, and so many times I could see her sitting Daniel down and giving him a piece of cake or a cookie. Daniel would have loved to go with her out to her flower garden to enjoy the beautiful roses she so cared for. Daniel enjoyed sitting on the wooden swing beside my grandmother’s garden, and I was saddened that she was never able to sit with him on that swing as she had done with her other grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mostly I think of my grandfather James Compton Lloyd, who died June 27 2007. Daniel was born 1 year after my Papa died so the 2 never had a chance to meet but I often thought of the wonderful things Daniel and Papa would have done together. My grandfather loved taking walks in the woods; listening to the birds, looking for bugs and snakes under rocks, going fishing, all things Daniel was already enthralled with. I could envision Papa showing Daniel how to put a worm on the hook, pointing to a birds nest in a tree, teaching Daniel how to whistle, and mostly I could always see the love that my Papa would have had for Daniel and Daniel for him. The two of them would have been perfect companions on journeys through the woods.

Daniel is now on a list I never wanted him on; the list of relatives that have passed before me. I will keep our ancestors close while I continue my journey, and I will find comfort knowing that no matter what may cross my path these ancestors and my son will always be side by side in heart.

My son was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia last week, so we are still in the hospital, and when we go home he is going to need lots of help from me for a while. So, I don't know when I will have the time or energy to dig into genealogy. Though I'm thinking that in a few weeks getting a few minutes to do research will be a nice way to relax. I may drop into post here and there, but as you can ll understand, my son needs me and my energy right now.

I'm not deleting the blog and look forward to getting back to my genealogy work. Thanks so much.jerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08303817138122836095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1711708351195036777.post-91071697932181695912011-06-06T10:17:00.001-06:002011-06-06T11:00:21.728-06:00The Face of Genealogy

Mary Bolt Lloyd turned 91 on May 22. It was so nice to be there with her, my mother and my aunt, but the part that really choked me up was that my 2 year old son was there also and my grandmother was all smiles watching D run around and eat cake. I don't think D will remember the party when he grows up, though I do have pictures, but I will remember that 4 generations were there that day celebrating.

So, though the rain was coming down good, and I could hear the thunder getting closer, there was no way I was staying in the car; all the way from Denver Co and Thomas and Sallie's graves were just a few feet away. I wandered around not knowing which area the graves would be in and then I spotted a nicely kept group plot down the hill a bit.

I also spent some time in the library and found the early deed from 1880 when Thomas Powers purchased land from David McNabb (I think David is Sallie's father, but no proof). The deed info is going to take some serious investigation since the boundaries are listed as: the Tennessee River, beginning with a box alder on the property of Silas McNabb, passing by a walnut by the old road, thence up the mountain and cornering with the black hickories. Yep, that tells me he at least had a river view :) There are a few names listed on adjoining properties but I'm not too sure the hickories and box alder will still be a good landmark.

I took a few more pictures at the cemetery and wanted to take more but the thunder and lightning finally got close enough to make me want to take cover. I will try to get back at some point and take pictures of all the graves in the cemetery as many of them are crumbling and becoming more unreadable.
